Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

Updated: May 21, 2022

This is a book review for the book Codependent No More, by Melody Beattie.

One of the best things I ever did was make "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie a required reading for my Reiki Master students. A bestselling book still in print over 25 years later, Codependent No More was the mainstream world's introduction to ideas of unhealthy codependency. Melody Beattie jumped into the discussion with a book that is easy to read and understand, and filled with profound insight.

Coming in at 238 pages, Codependent No More teaches readers what codependency can look like, and how to begin to shift your personal relationships with others so that they are more healthy. The focus is on what you as an individual can do, rather than changing others. Even if you don't see yourself as codependent, it's likely that you have a friend, family members, or coworkers who are. Thus the information in this book is relevant to everyone.

In the world of Reiki, energy healing, light work, and earth-based magic, we are often so busy focusing on technique, or on vibrational states such as love & gratitude, that parts of our egoic development get left behind. As healers of Earth, it's still so important for us to be able to navigate daily life. We want to have healthy relationships and day-to-day successes. We need to be able to pay our bills and handle our responsibilities. While energy healing helps us to realign what may be getting in the way of that on the astral planes, we still need practical techniques for recognizing energy patterns in daily life, and handling them in the material world.

That's where the Melodie Beattie comes in. This is a wonderful book for basics around personal boundaries and inner talk. There is a companion workbook, and several other books on special topics in co-dependency that Beattie has also created for the student who wants to go deeper.

The first time I read this book through, I found that it highlighted a lot of what I'd learned in my youth through counseling and religion. At the same time, the simple homework exercises and life examples peppered throughout gave me the opportunity to reflect on my life experiences from an adult perspective, and receive even more healing.

If you are in service-based work of any kind, I think this book is a good one to read. I highly recommend it to all Reiki practitioners in professional practice.
