I've taught hundreds of Reiki classes over the years and one thing students will sometimes ask me is, "Can I--or How do I start a career in Reiki?" If you want to starting a career in Reiki, or in the energy healing industry, begin very simply, and take your practice one step at a time. Don't try to rush it, and don't get overwhelmed, because you're actually creating a healing lifestyle as well.
Here's what to do:
Explore Reiki Offerings to Start Your Career
Start by learning about the history, principles, and techniques of Reiki. This can help you understand what Reiki is and how it works. You can do this by reading books, attending workshops or classes, or working with a Reiki Master.
There are a lot of different types of careers that Reiki Masters end up going into, so allowing yourself to enter into the world of energy healing will help expose you to your options.
Get Formal Reiki Training
I'd start right away with Reiki 1 Training, as it's an immensely healing class. Once you've taken Reiki 1, you'll have a basic understanding of Reiki. There are many schools and traditions of Reiki that offer training programs, ranging from one-day workshops to multi-year programs. You can begin with something simple and always go deeper if you feel called. Choose a program that aligns with your goals and interests, and make sure it is taught by a reputable and experienced Reiki Master.
Start Practicing Reiki On Yourself Everyday
As you go through your training, don't forget to practice self-treatment and treating others on a regular basis. When I first took Reiki training, the energy itself stirred up a lot of healing and I forgot all about my self practice! Once I really committed to my daily practice, it was as if the entire world opened up for me. Practicing on yourself and others will help you develop your skills and confidence as a Reiki practitioner.
Get Reiki Master Certification
While master-level certification is not required to practice Reiki, it can be helpful for building credibility and demonstrating your commitment to the practice. Reiki Master also has such beautiful teachings, it will help you remain inspired in your career journey.
Take a Business Class
When it comes to career and livelihood, you'll need to figure out how to do something you love that can also help pay for you bills. Many wonderful Reiki students have never been exposed to entrepreneurship or taught about small business, and that lack of knowledge prevents them from establishing a lasting practice. But it doesn't have to!
If you already know that you want a career in Reiki, take some basic free classes at at a small business support organization like the SCORE Association. You don't need to sell your left kidney or mortgage your home in order to learn business, and since it's really about cultivating a mindset, you can take small steps in this direction over time.
Taking a short business class will help you decide if you want to create a healing practice or business for yourself, or if you'd prefer to work for others. Some of my past Reiki students and friends have chosen to work inside of hospitals, for exercise gyms, and through the formal school system. Every year there are more and more government grants opening up to support the integration alternative healing into mainstream medicine. You could create an entire career offering Reiki with insurance billing for car accident victims! (seriously.)
In my advanced Reiki trainings, I include books that will help my students with their mindset for starting a career as a Reiki professional. There are so many pathways, it takes time to get clear.
Build Your Reiki Healing Practice in your Career Journey
You can actually start building your own healing practice after you've taken your second Reiki training. Ask people you know if you can work on them. Once you have completed your Reiki Master training, you will already have some experience, and then you can launch your professional practice with confidence by offering Reiki sessions to clients.
There are so many ways to work with Reiki, you may not choose a hands on approach. I have students who have gone on to create Reiki-charged essence elixirs, offer products, life coach, and more. But beginning with single sessions is great if you're not yet clear about your direction.
Expand Your Mind
Do you want Reiki to be a career or a hobby? ...You'll need to decide for yourself what you want to do, why you want to do it, how that will look for you, and what it will take to get there. Yes, I know that's a lot, but remember these are evolving questions. If you're really interested in a Reiki career, these are questions you'll probably want to ask yourself every year. The answers will help you create a successful path in life that you enjoy.
Remember that starting a career in Reiki requires dedication and commitment, but it can be a rewarding and fulfilling path for those who are passionate about helping others and supporting their healing journey.
