Reflections on Goddess Magic ✨

In myth and folklore, goddesses have always held magic. Of the Greek Goddesses, Athena was known for her strategy and wisdom, Aphrodite for the magnetism of love, and grain Goddess Demeter for her great fertility as the Mother and Earth goddess in the cycle of life.

In Celtic stories, the Goddess Brigid worked with fire at the forge, bringing the flame of hope and creation to her people, as well as healing, creativity, and poetry. The Egyptian Goddess Isis was a weaver of magic and rebirth. She held such immense healing power she was called "one more august than the gods."

Many goddesses are tied to the elements: sacred wind, volcanos and fire, the ocean, moonlight, fertile soil, ancient trees, and sun. They remind us that divinity is alive in the natural world all around us, as well as within.

These Goddesses have stories that, when shared out loud, become maps of energy, how energy moves on the planet, and how we can each wield intentional energy to protect and transform within our lives.

Through understanding the stories of the goddess, we actually learn about ourselves, and about humanity. The energy and the stories are both empowerments that help us live more fully in life.

Today, patriarchal society in western culture has minimized many stories of the Goddess, but we still see glimpses of her magic!

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman movie was a hit in 2017 because we were hungry to see a depiction of beauty, softness, reason, and power all wound together in a woman, especially one who could not be harmed. We wanted some of that magic!

Whether we believe the Goddess to be an ancient archetype, or an actual living being, Her energy stirs something deep within us. We recognize ourselves in her. We want to know her. She lights us up!

As a priestess exploring the mysteries of the sacred divine feminine, here's what I’ve come to believe: the magic of the Goddess is actually within all things.

Thich Nhat Hanh once said, “Don’t think that Mother Earth is outside of you. Looking deeply you can find Mother Earth within you, just as your biological mother who gave birth to you is also within you. She is in each of your cells.

The earth activist Starhawk also writes in The Spiral Dance, "The Goddess has infinite aspects and thousands of names-She is the reality behind many metaphors. She is reality, the manifest deity, omnipresent in all of life, in each of us. The Goddess is not separate from the world-She is the world, and all things in it: moon, sun, earth, star, stone, seed, flowing river, wind, wave, leaf and branch, bud and blossom, fang and claw, woman and man."

Which means that accessing Goddess magic can look like taking a walk in the woods to reset your mind. Or holding someone’s hand while they cry, and not trying to fix or minimize their feelings. Or trusting the way a dream lingers on the edges of your mind in the morning and knowing that the unseen, unnameable is important too. Goddess energy feels different. It's connected to a deeper knowing, and stirring within.

We don't have to live in a trance state or spend every weekend at moon circles (unless that’s your thing 😜) in order to connect with this energy.

Just notice where sacredness already lives in your real, everyday life, in how you show up for others, how you walk away when something isn’t aligned, how you feed yourself when you’re too tired to cook.

And I love that. Because whether or not we’ve ever called on the Goddess, most of us have had moments when we felt sacredness humming just beneath our skin, or had a feeling of being deeply protected in the moment.

In healing sessions, in grief, in beauty, in deep conversations that cause goosebumps, we receive momentary glimpses of something beautiful, comforting, and full of love.

As healers and space holders, we are keepers of that current of love. It expresses differently through each of us. What we do in holding space for others may look simple, but it’s important. We listen deeply. We hold the sacred. We honor energy. We trust timing. And in those moments we are the goddess.

There’s something powerful about imagining we are Goddesses walking on earth... women who carry love in our hearts like a bonfire, who set boundaries like storm fronts, who create with beauty, and destroy what no longer serves us without flinching.

Maybe it’s time we start calling ourselves magic.
