How to Set Up A Business Bank Account For Your Healing Business

When I first opened Healing Heart Reiki, I used my personal bank account for everything. Every session, every flower I bought for the altar, every candle I lit for my clients, all of it tangled in the same account I used for groceries, cat food, and my son’s frozen blueberry snacks.
It didn’t take long for things to feel energetically muddy. I couldn’t track income clearly. I didn’t know what I was really spending on my practice. And spiritually, it started to feel like my business was an extension of my personal chaos.
Back when I lived in Los Angeles, I'd taken classes in how to start a business, and I clearly remembered the importance of setting up a business bank account, but I'd always felt a little wobbly about the true business side of my creative life.
In my healing practice, it didn't take me long to want to fix this. You see, your business is its own entity. It's even called that in the business world; it's a business entity. This entity needs it's own parameters to grow, and that begins with business registration, and its own bank account to hold the energy of what is being created.
Opening a business bank account changed everything for me. And I don’t mean just for taxes. I mean it changed the way I held my business. It gave it structure, boundaries, and a container to grow in. Suddenly I could see where my money was going within my business, and whether or not I was overspending. I could make better decisions to direct the growth of my vision.
So... Here’s how to do it!

Setting Up Your Bank Account
Step 1: Choose Your Bank (or Credit Union)
Look for a local credit union or small bank with low monthly fees and good customer service. Nowadays you might even find banks with no monthly fees at all, as long as you keep a healthy minimum.
Don't be afraid to read the fine paperwork for the different accounts. It takes some time but this is important. If there are things you don't understand, ask at the bank.
I prefer local banks to start, because the conversations you have with your banker will help you develop knowledge and confidence. Local banks are often more willing to work with you when times are hard.
Ask yourself: Would I trust these people to help me in a pinch? If you're not feeling the bank vibes, don't do it.
Bonus points if the bank aligns with your values or has programs for small, women-owned, or BIPOC-owned businesses.
Step 2: Get Your Business Documents in Order
You’ll need:
Your EIN (Employer Identification Number) – you can get one for free at irs.gov
Your business name registration or DBA (Doing Business As) if you're not using your own name
Your business license (depending on your city or county)
A valid photo ID
Don't let this list intimidate you. Think of each document like a stone you’re laying on the path to sovereignty. I teach a lot of this in my Healers in Business program, and you can also learn online about how to acquire each of these.

Step 3: Make an Appointment at the Bank
Some banks let you walk in, but I recommend setting an appointment, especially if you’re the kind of person who gets a little fried by fluorescent lighting.
A scheduled time means a real human will be waiting for you (and less time in the uncomfortable lobby chair).
As an aside, you can also open an account online in like 15 minutes... but I love the ceremony and connection of opening an initial account, and it makes thing more real. Which is often important in the beginning. But do what is easiest and best for you!
Step 4: Open Your Business Account & Fund It
You may need to put down a small deposit ($25–$100 is common, though some banks may require $1000-$3000). When you do this, breathe. This is an energetic transaction. You’re saying to the Universe: This is real and I ready to build something larger than me.
Be proud of yourself and allow yourself to feel excited. You are seeding the beginning of your business. Think of this seed money as your first gift to your business.

Step 5: Start Using It for Everything Business-Related
From this point forward, run every healing payment, every supply order, every scheduling app fee through this account. Keep personal and business energy completely separate.
Don't forget to pay yourself regularly from your business account. Just write yourself a check, with the description of what the payment is for. Try to be regular and consistent about those payments, to build the solid energy of your business.
Bonus Wisdom from the Front Lines:
I still remember the first time I wrote myself a check from my business account for paying myself. It was $200. Not much. But it felt like my business had become its own being, and she was now feeding me. At that moment, I started seeing Healing Heart Reiki as a legitimate business.
I've definitely made mistakes with my bank accounts in the past, and had challenges arise from low money consciousness, but what I've loved about my bank, the people who work there, and the entity of my business, is that everyone and everything has always been so positive.
Small business is truly the lifeblood of our country, and people create new businesses everyday, even people who know nothing about business. Many banks have wonderful people who are grounded, kind, and willing to explain all kinds of things about their work, so that you can do your work with ease.
Final Reminder
There's nothing really risky about setting up a business bank account. Just begin. If you're not sure which account is the best, you can always change in the future. The clarity will follow the action.
And if it helps, light a candle on your altar the day you open the account. Charge the candle with Reiki and set the intention for your money to grow for your highest good and the highest good of all. You are stepping into your role as a steward of energy and value in your business.
Remember, money is just a tangible reflection of energetic flow. When you hold it with reverence, it moves differently, and flows even more strongly. If you don't have enough of it, ask yourself what value you can create in the world, that someone would enjoy.
If you’re an energy healer who’s been feeling the call to build your business with more clarity, confidence, and sacred structure, I’d love to support you. Whether you’re just starting out or refining what you’ve already created, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Reach out and tell me what you’re building, what’s getting in the way, and how we can bring more alignment to the business side of your sacred work. You deserve a business that supports your magic.
